Powhatan County hosts the Regions 3 & 5 Meeting

On a lovely spring day, VACo held its third Regional Meeting of the year in historic Powhatan County.  On May 21, folks throughout VACo Regions 3 & 5 came together at the beautiful Independence Golf Club and were treated to gorgeous views and excellent conversation.  Representatives from Powhatan, New Kent, Albemarle, Fluvanna, and Hanover spent an exciting evening engaging with state legislators, learning from guest speakers, and deliberating about the mutual challenges and opportunities facing their respective localities.

Attendees benefited from the insight of State Senator Amanda Chase and Delegate Lee Ware, asking questions of the legislators about equal taxing authority, transportation, school safety, and more.  Emily Kilroy, Communications and Public Engagement Director in Albemarle County, shared an exciting presentation about the successful public outreach campaigns she and the Board of Supervisors have initiated.  In addition, Lauren Snellings, Research Director at Voices for Virginia’s Children, provided important information about ensuring a complete count in the upcoming 2020 Census. County government folks from around the two regions then offered up the challenges currently facing their communities, discussing broadband expansion, growth management, and economic development, just to name a few.

The 2019 Regions 3 & 5 boasted about 40 folks in attendance, ranging from planning district commission officials to state legislative offices, and from VACo sponsors and partners to, of course, county officials.  VACo extends its sincere appreciation to all who took the time to join us for such an informative discussion.  We especially thank the folks of Powhatan County for hosting this meeting.
