Rule Number 18 In Subject Verb Agreement

October 5, 2021

Countless nouns usually accept singular verbs. (As the name suggests, countless names cannot be counted. Example: hair, milk, water, butter, honey and syrup.) 4. Use plural sheaves with indeterminate plural pronouns: twenty may seem like many rules for a subject, but you will quickly discover that one relates to the other. In the end, everything will make sense. (In the following examples, the concordant subject is bold and the verb is in italics.) Over the past few years, the SAT test service has not judged any of you to be strictly singular. According to merriam-Webster`s Dictionary of English Usage: “Obviously, since English, no singular and plural is and remains. The idea that it is only singular is a myth of unknown origin that seems to have emerged in the nineteenth century. If it appears to you as a singular in the context, use a singular; If it appears as a plural, use a plural. Both are acceptable beyond serious criticism. If none of them clearly means “not one,” a singular verb follows.

3. “I`m one of the eccentrics who don`t tweet,” or “Those eccentrics I`m one of don`t tweet,” or “I`m an eccentric who doesn`t tweet,” or “Of those eccentrics, I`m someone who doesn`t tweet.” I tend to have the writer be the right subject, not the eccentrics. Rule 9. In collective nouns such as group, jury, family, audience, population, the verb can be singular or plural, depending on the intention of the author. 18 Rule #18i  If the subject follows the verb, you will find the subject and make sure that the verb is compliant. This is the film I borrowed.  Here are the films I lent.  There was an accident on the parkway.  There have been two accidents on the parkway. Some names like news, physics, statistics, economics, gymnastics, aerobics, measles, mumps, and headquarters, which end in “s,” seem plural, but they are actually singular, and therefore they adopt singulars. This rule can lead to bumps on the road…
