This comprehensive program with home study and a follow-up session is open to all County Supervisors. It is one of the five core courses in the Virginia Certified County Supervisor Program, a joint effort of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Association of Counties.

Dr. Mike Chandler, Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech, and Dr. Martha Walker, Extension Community Viability Specialist at Virginia Tech, will serve as class instructors. In addition, practitioners and subject matter experts will be featured. There is an eight-week home study component following the May 31 classroom session all participants are required to complete in advance of the July 29 session.

Grant Funds available
to Dam Owners and
Local Governments

Dear Dam Owners and Floodplain Managers:

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Dam Safety and Floodplain Management Division is currently accepting applications for grants from the Virginia Dam Safety, Floodplain Prevention and Protection Assistance Fund.  For 2013, a total of $305,000 is available for grants from the Fund.  The maximum amount available per grant will be based on project scoring and the total amount of funds requested.

The Grant Manual details how to apply for a 50 percent matching, reimbursable grant and is available online at www.dcr.virginia.gov, under Dam Safety & Floodplain Management. 

A paper copy may be requested for those who do not have Internet access by calling 804-371-6095.

Applications must be received by DCR no later than 5 p.m., May 15.

Following are the eligible project types:
Dam Safety (for government and private entities)

  • Dam Break Inundation Zone Analysis, Mapping and Digitization

  • Emergency Action Plan Development

  • Incremental Damage Analysis

  • Engineering for Dam Repairs

Flood Prevention and Protection (for government entities):

  • Locality Flood Warning and Response Systems such as Reverse 911 and IFLOWS

  • Improvements to Locality Floodplain Program and Acceptance in Community Rating System

  • Locality Floodplain Information and Educational Programs

Draft Six-Year Improvement Program for transportation released for public comment

The draft six-year program is online at www.virginiadot.org/projects/syp-default.asp. The program can also be reviewed at Virginia Department of Transportation’s district and residency offices and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s Richmond office.

The public may comment about essential rail, public transportation, commuter service, bicycle, pedestrian and highway projects (except local/secondary roads) at the hearings. Public comments will be considered before the board adopts a final program in June.
