Making a Governance Difference explores the application of innovative decision-making models to the creation of purpose-driven policy. Due to the involvement of multiple elected officials, government professionals, and citizens, local decision-making can become a challenging task. Therefore, this class will teach students about the importance of establishing a clear process in order to move from simply defining a problem, to implementing a course of action, to finally evaluating an outcome. Participants will examine how legal principles established by the U.S. and Virginia Constitutions, the application of the Dillon Rule, and various ordinances and regulations influence local policy creation. Finally, class participants will explore innovative methods of working effectively across boundaries, applying strategic thinking strategies to the complex puzzle of local decision-making.
