Board of Education considering regulations for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia

August 5, 2015

In response to HB 1215 (Richard Bell), passed by the 2012 General Assembly, the Board of Education is required to promulgate regulations establishing standards for accreditation public virtual schools that enroll students full time.

The Board approved proposed amendments to the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia to address public virtual schools April 25, 2013. The proposed amendments (i) define a public virtual school; (ii) specify those provisions in the current regulations that are not applicable to public virtual schools, such as exempting the school from school facilities and safety requirements unless the school is in a stand-alone facility, and providing appropriate options for library services, counseling and student services, and extracurricular activities; and (iii) add provisions applicable only to public virtual schools, such as ensuring that students have access to the necessary technology and monitoring student engagement online.

The amendments to the regulations were published in the Virginia Register of Regulations Vol. 31 Iss. 24, July 27, 2015.

A public hearing on the proposed amendments to the regulations will be held September 10, 2015, immediately following adjournment of the Board of Education business meeting. The hearing will be located on the 22nd Floor of the James Monroe Building, 101 North 14th Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219.

An online public comment period is now open on Town Hall. Public comments will be accepted through September 25, 2015.
