The Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) recognized the sixth class of County Supervisor Certification Program graduates during the VACo Annual Conference in Bath County.
The County Supervisor Certification Program was created in response to VACo members requesting more in-depth knowledge about government operations.
The County Supervisor Certification Program is a partnership between Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Tech and VACo that provides training to enhance the leadership and decision-making skills of county supervisors in the Commonwealth.
Graduates of the 18-month certification program include:
• Larry K. Bartlett, Grayson County
• David W. Blanchard, Highland County
• Brenda Sutherland, Grayson County
This year, VACo received a 33 entries for the 2011 Achievement Awards that recognizes excellence in county government programs. VACo selected 12 winners and for the second time, declared a BEST ACHIEVEMENT winner. That distinction went to Isle of Wight County.
VACo would like to thank its judges: Tedd Povar, associate director of the Virginia Institute of Government; Barbara Rose, former Hanover County deputy county attorney; and Pete Stith, former Chesterfield County deputy county administrator for community development.
The Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Go Green Awards recognizing local governments that have implemented practical actions that reduce carbon emissions and make energy use more efficient.

This is the third year VACo has participated in the program, which was an initiative started by the Virginia Municipal League in 2007 called “Go Green Virginia.”
The program is generously supported and sponsored by Moseley Architects and Trane.
“A couple of years ago, VACo dedicated our new building that was renovated with green construction as a priority,” VACo Executive Director Jim Campbell said. “We are proud to be a part of an exciting program that encourages our members to implement the same thinking and priority.”
